BIMM alumni Fontaines D.C. hit Number 1 in the Official Album Charts with Skinty Fia
Fontaines D.C. have soared to Number 1 in the Official Album Charts in the UK and Ireland with their new release, Skinty Fia. The band, who met studying at BIMM Dublin, are embarking on a world tour this year and next, and are raking in the accolades as they enjoy the peak of their stellar career so far.
This Grammy award-nominated band from Ireland features Carlos O’Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan III, Grian Chatten and Tom Coll. Both of their last two releases (Dogrel and A Hero’s Death) landed them in the top 10, as well as a Mercury Prize nomination and more recently were named Best Band in the World at the 2022 NME Awards- an accolade shared with the likes of Metallica, Foo Fighters and Slipknot.
This truly is a crowning moment for the young band. Released on 22 April 2022 on Partisan Records, Skinty Fia touches on the band members’ heritage and the image and perception of the Irish diaspora; it’s a highly personal anecdote that also addresses generational issues and speaks to the listener.
To reach the top spot, this album outsold its closest competitor by 2:1, and physical sales accounted for a whopping 87% of all sales this week. Fontaines D.C. also topped the Official Vinyl Charts this week in an epic chart takeover.
BIMM Dublin Principal, Alan Cullivan, shares his thoughts on the band’s success:
“While it is fitting to send the band huge congratulations from all at their old college on the current chart success, I think it is even more important to acknowledge and congratulate them on the level of songwriting, performance and the all-round creativity achieved on Skinty Fia. It’s inspiring to us and I feel without any doubt, it will be inspirational to the next generation of artists.”
We’re so excited to follow Fontaines D.C. and their incredible musical journey. We can’t wait to see what they do next!
