The Strypes at BIMM Dublin
Hailing from Cavan, The Strypes are a home-grown Irish musical success story. The incredibly young four-piece made a visit to BIMM Dublin to talk to the students about their rapid rise to fame and what they’ve learned along the way. The lucky audience were also treated to a live performance of some of The Strypes’ signature vintage-fuelled bluesy garage rock.
After opening the Masterclass with a trio of belting live numbers, the band were joined by music journalist Eamon Sweeney for an on-stage interview with a Q&A audience session.
BIMM students were keen to ask the band insightful questions about song-writing, touring and their enormous success only three years into their career. With all the band members still less than twenty years old, The Strypes were happy to stress that their youth was a bonus, not a hindrance. Drummer Evan Walsh said:
“I’ve been drumming since I was three years old. We were lucky that we all started playing so young because it didn’t matter if you played a chord wrong – you had the time and patience to learn it right at that age.”
Emma Stapleton, a BA2 Vocals Student, was impressed with the band’s presence and know-how:
“The Strypes knew a lot about the industry. It was really interesting to hear how they were coping with being away from home. It was a great Masterclass!”
Guitar undergraduate, David Sleator agreed:
“The band had a really good insight. They were so mature and grounded for their age and their success. It’s nice to know you can still be level-headed if you reach that level of success!”
The band have high profile fans too, including Elton John and Dave Grohl. In May they play their biggest gig to date supporting Foo Fighters at Slane Castle on an impressive line-up of acts, including Kaiser Chiefs, Ash and Hozier. Bassist Pete O’Hanlon told BIMM Dublin:
“Playing Slane will be our biggest gig so far. Eighty thousand people! Because it’s in Ireland it means a lot more to us as well.”
After two more live numbers it was time to hit the road. The Strypes left behind some quality rock n roll vibes, and a growing success story to inspire everyone in attendance.
